Part 1 of the 16 minute version of Santa Esmeralda’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. This rare, extended version of the song; first released in the summer of 1977, took up an entire side of their album.

Originally, this song was first released in 1964 by songer/pianist Nina Simone. UK rock band The Animals made a hit with this song in 1965. “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” has been by music artists such as The Moody Blues, Elvis Costello, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Gary Moore, Robben Ford, and New Buffalo. Rapper Common sampled the original version of the song, as well as Lil’ Wayne. Santa Esmeralda’s version was featured in the 2003 film Kill Bill Vol. 1.

In this video, presented in high definition (HD), you’ll see the basic history behind “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. You’ll see some interesting photos/pictures of the various artists who have covered the song. Formal fiddleback chasubles and modest Franciscan sandals come together in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (Traditional Latin Mass) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Friary of the Franciscans of the Immaculate. The video is put to beautiful music from the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate, our sister order. The music was recorded in Italy and is a fine example of the high quality of their music which, combined with the friars in Italy, are playing a major part in spearheading the reform of liturgical music in Italy.

This month (the 31st) marks the 15th anniversary of the death of the one and only Selena Quintanilla- Pérez.

Many music artist come and go, but Selena was one of those legendary, one in a million artists who made history by changing not only music but a culture. With her powerful voice, unique style that included many different types of music, and raw, natural beauty and talent, she became not only the most beloved Latina, but the first Latina to break many records as well as cultural, gender and language barriers. Many of her records go unbroken to this day. But despite her status as the Queen of Tejano and the first Hispanic-American woman to become a pop icon, what Selena was really loved for was who she was as a person. She was not hung up in her celebrity status. She was humble, kind, funny, and just another girl from the neighborhood- a neighbor, a friend. She cared for people and would help in anyway, whether it be a charity concert, a benefit softball game, or a speech to students about the importance of education, Selena was always helping. She was always doing kind things for people, and was the principle role model for Latin American children who adored her (though she was loved by all ages). Her legacy of music, kindness, and positively still greatly influences Latin music and culture. And for that, she will always be a legend. Another Selena will never exist.

Selena, may you never be forgotten! This video is for you. Rest in peace, we love you.
