HEINEKEN $20,000 MURAL SEARCH WINNER

Check out my photography work at:

Christian Cortes Selected to Design Latin Music-Inspired Murals in NY, Miami and LA
White Plains, NY — September 20, 2007 — Colombian artist, Christian Cortes from Jackson Heights, Queens was declared the winner of the Heineken Murals Search 2007, the nation’s premier beer importer announced today. In August, Heineken USA launched a local search to identify a skilled Latino artist for its national murals project themed, “Inspirado por la Música Latina,” where Hispanic artists were invited to submit a unique piece of artwork capturing the energetic and inspirational rhythm and legends of Latin music.

The contest culminated in a private event and exhibition last night at the cultural epicenter, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art. During this private event, more than 30 local finalists had the opportunity to showcase their talent to leaders in the Hispanic Arts and local communities. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of Christian Cortes as the winner of the Heineken Murals Search 2007, “Inspirado por la Musica Latina.”

Christian Cortes was awarded $20,000 for his artistic contributions for the design of four large-scale Heineken murals to be placed in New York, Miami and Los Angeles and unveiled this fall. Entries were judged by a panel of knowledgeable industry leaders: Julián Zugazagoitia, Executive Director of El Museo del Barrio; Emely Socolov, Executive Director of Mano a Mano; and Crystal Chaparro, Creative Director of The Association of Hispanic Arts. All entries were judged based on originality, creativity and interpretation of the theme, “Inspirado por la Música Latina.”

“I feel honored that Heineken has chosen me to design their Latin-Music inspired murals” said Cortes. “I hope my interpretation of the theme can represent the richness of our Latin culture and leave a lasting impression on our local neighborhoods. Latin music has always motivated me to paint and I hope my paintings might motivate the communities in New York, Los Angeles and Miami.”

For years, the Heineken Murals have displayed the works of some very talented Hispanic artists in predominately Hispanic neighborhoods of major cities across the country. These murals provide each local community with a very special piece of art that celebrates Latino culture.

“We were excited with the extraordinary breadth and quality of art work that was submitted by Hispanic artists across the tri-state area,” said Paul Smailes, Hispanic Brand Manager for Heineken USA. “We are proud to have the opportunity to work with Christian Cortes who brought a powerful and contemporary interpretation of the Latin music theme, and are excited to exhibit Christian’s vision in Latino neighborhoods in New York, Miami & Los Angeles in the fall .”

Cypress Hill – Latin Lingo (Uncut)

Cypress Hill is an American/Latin American hip hop group from South Gate, California. Originally called DVX, the name was changed after Mellow Man Ace left in 1988. Cypress Hill was the first Latino group to have platinum and multi-platinum albums have sold over 18 million albums worldwide.

Cypress Hill’s self-titled first album was released in August 1991. The lead single was the double A-side “The Phuncky Feel One”/”How I Could Just Kill A Man” which received heavy airplay on urban and college radio. The other two singles released from the album were “Hand On The Pump” and “Latin Lingo”, the latter of which combined English and Spanish lyrics. The success of these singles led to the album selling two million copies in the US alone. DJ Muggs, Cypress Hill’s producer, subsequently produced House of Pain’s first album, then worked on other Soul Assassins projects like Funkdoobiest. The band made their first appearance at Lollapalooza on the side stage in 1992.

Black Sunday, the group’s second album, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 1993, recording the highest Soundscan for a rap group up until that time. Also, with their debut still in the charts, they became the first rap group to have 2 albums in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 at the same time. With “Insane in the Brain” becoming a crossover hit, the album went triple platinum in the U.S. and sold about 3.25 million copies.

Cypress Hill was banned from Saturday Night Live after Muggs smoked a joint on-air and the band trashed their instruments while playing their second single “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That”. The band headlined the “Soul Assassins” tour with House of Pain and Funkdoobiest as support, then performed on a college tour with Rage Against the Machine and Seven Year Bitch. In 1993, Cypress Hill also had two tracks on the Judgment Night soundtrack, teamed up with Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth.

The band played at the 1994 Woodstock Festival, introducing their new member Eric Bobo, formerly a percussionist with the Beastie Boys. Rolling Stone magazine named the band as the best rap group in their music awards voted by critics and readers. Cypress Hill played at Lollapalooza for two successive years, topping the bill in 1995. They also appeared on the The Simpsons episode “Homerpalooza”. Prior to Bobo joining the crew, Panchito “Ponch” Gomez sat in as a percussionist when not acting.

Their third album Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom was released in 1995, selling 1.5 million copies and reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of the hit single “Throw Your Set in the Air”[citation needed]. Cypress Hill also contributed a track “I Wanna Get High” to the High Times sponsored Hempilation album to support NORML.

BMI Women Latin Music

MLV kicked off the 2009 Latin Alternative Music Conference with BMI’s Women in Latin Music @ SOB’s in New York City.

The diverse line-up of women artists included Afrobeta’s Cristina and Tony (the sole, brave guy in the showcase), singer songwriters Alih Jey, BeaBa, and Cristal Marie, Funk-fusionist Eljuri, the Bachateras of Girlz Talk, and Mexican hip-hop star Nina Dioz (not shown here).

In celebration of women artists, we asked each act to fill us in on the women who’ve influenced their own music. Their answers ranged from European songstress Laura Pausini to Bjork and Fiona Apple. But one name stood out as three of the above artists referenced her work. That was none other than Gloria Estefan who continues to reign as the leading woman pioneer in Latin Music.
